There are scaffolds attached under the stages of the Guided Inquiry Design Process, to assist students Open, Immerse, Explore, Identify, Gather, Create and Share, and Evaluate. These are by no means all the available scaffolds, but represent a gathering of TL expertise over a long period. Many of our favourite TL scaffolds can be re-jigged to meet the stages of the GID. Please feel free to contribute your own in the appropriate stage.
There are only three scaffolds students really need for a GI unit:
Inquiry journal – This is for taking notes, and for doing reflections.
Inquiry log – This is for keeping a bibliographic record of the sources you’ve used, in order to go back to those sources should you need to, and because you must present a bibliography with your assignment.
Inquiry chart – This is for pulling all your ideas together at the end of your research.
Here is a template that contains an inquiry journal, log and chart, all in one document.
The benefit of having the inquiry journal, log and chart in one document is that it can be used for formative and summative assessment.
